Bishop G.A. Thompson's Bio
Bishop G. A. Thompson is the founder and senior pastor of Jubilee Christian Church in Boston , MA - the largest inner city congregation in New England. Consecrated to the office of bishop in September 1999, Bishop Thompson is a charismatic, anointed teacher and preacher of the gospel whose practical application of the Word of God has brought thousands to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.
Originally from Philadelphia , PA , Bishop Thompson was educated in the Philadelphia Public Schools and graduated in 1964. During the spring of the same year, Bishop received Christ as Lord during a Sunday morning worship service at the High Street Church of God. Shortly following, he accepted his call to the Christian ministry and began preaching at the age of eighteen.
In 1971, Bishop graduated from the Moody Bible Institute ( Chicago , IL ) with a BA in Bible Theology and continued with graduate studies at Northwestern University (Evanston, IL ). After a short time at Northwestern, Bishop accepted the call to pastor the Shawmut Community Church of God in Boston 's South End in May 1972. In July, he and his family relocated to Boston to begin building ministry in a city that would later recognize him as a primary "watchman".
In 1982, after much prayer and consecration, Bishop resigned the pastorate of the Shawmut Community Church of God to follow the word of the Lord to do a "greater work" in the city. Bishop was given the vision to establish "A church without walls" - a house of worship that would transform the city of Boston spiritually, economically, socially, educationally, politically, and culturally - by any godly means necessary. Thus, Bishop, along with his wife, stepped out in faith and founded New Covenant Christian Church. The first service was held on October 3rd in the Grande Ballroom of the Bradford Hotel in downtown Boston.
Today, New Covenant Christian Church, now Jubilee Christian Church, numbers over 4,000 in active membership and ministers to nearly 5,000 over three services on Sundays. Under the leadership of the Bishop, the city has come to recognize the congregation of Jubilee for its charismatic worship, its compelling presentation of the Gospel, its early morning radio prayer ministry, and its continued involvement in community and political affairs.
Currently, Bishop Thompson is the president of the Black Ministerial Alliance of Greater Boston (BMA), the largest African-American clergy association in New England that serves over 30,000 people in the Boston area. As president, he provides vision for the alliance and gives spiritual oversight to other pastors as a part of his apostolic calling and as a true testament to his commitment to the transformation of Boston . Additionally, under the covering of "A Church Without Walls", Bishop and Pastor Yvonne give spiritual oversight to over eighteen pastors and congregations across the United States.
Bishop Thompson has preached several series on healthy marriages and families, and has authored numerous books and teaching manuals on foundational truth, church doctrine, and prayer. Bishop and Pastor Yvonne have been married thirty-eight years and have eight children and thirteen grandchildren.
